Symptoms

When you start Microsoft Word for Mac, or when you try to open a new document, you experience one of the following conditions:

Exit every Microsoft program running on your Mac and click on the Word option in the Apple Menu. Tap on the “Preferences” option from the list. Choose the File Locations option and select the “User templates”. Print a document in Word for Mac. Before you print, it’s a good idea to preview your document to make sure that it looks the way you want. You can also specify which pages you want to print and print on both sides of the page. You can also change the orientation for specific pages or for specific sections (if your document is divided by section breaks).

Note

This error message may also occur during usage of application such as saving a document.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow steps below.

Microsoft Word for Mac 2008 or Later

Step 1: Quit all applications

  1. On the Apple menu, click Force Quit.

  2. Select an application in the 'Force Quit Applications' window.

  3. Click Force Quit.

  4. Repeat the previous steps until all active applications.

  16. On the Go menu, click Home.

  17. Open Library.

  18. Open the Application Support folder.

  19. Open the Microsoft folder.

  20. Open the Office folder.

  21. Open the User Templates folder.

  22. Locate the file that is named Normal, and move the file to the desktop.

  23. Start Word and check whether the problem still occurs. If the problem seems to be resolved, you can move the Normal file to the Trash. If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next step.

If the issue continues to occur, go to the next step.

Step 3: Peform clean boot

Step 5: Use the 'Repair Disk Permissions' option

You can use the Repair Disk Permissions option to troubleshoot permissions problems in Mac OS X 10.2 or later versions. To use the Repair Disk Permissions option, follow these steps:

  1. On the Go menu, click Utilities.
  2. Start the Disk Utility program.
  3. Click the primary hard disk drive for your computer.
  4. Click the First Aid tab.
  5. Click Repair Disk Permissions.

Note

The Disk Utility program only repairs software that is installed by Apple. This utility also repairs folders, such as the Applications folder. However, this utility does not repair software that is in your home folder.

Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac

  1. Quit all Microsoft Office for Mac programs.

  2. On the Go menu, click Home.

  3. Open Library.

    Note

    The Library folder is hidden in MAC OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

  4. Open the Preferences folder.

  5. Look for a file that is named com.microsoft.Word.plist.

  6. If you locate the file, move it to the desktop. If you do not locate the file, the program is using the default preferences.

  7. If you locate the file and move it to the desktop, start Word, and check whether the problem still occurs. If the problem still occurs, quit Word, and restore the file to its original location. Then, go to the next step. If the problem seems to be resolved, you can move the com.microsoft.Word.plist file to the trash.

If you are unable to sign into Microsoft Office (or Outlook repeatedly prompts you for login, does not show any data, edit a Word/Excel/PowerPoint data file, or receive encrypted connection error) it may be due to a NetID password change, a NetID change, or corrupted account credentials. Follow some common solutions to this issue below.

  • Option 1 - Update your software to the latest version
    • Windows OS
      Run Windows Update and install the latest updates.

  • Option 2 - Your account was compromised and you are blocked from connecting

  • Option 3 - Reset/Remove your account credentials from within your OS
    • Windows OS
      Remove/Delete all Outlook/Office records from within credential manager.
      Mac OS
      Access the keychain application and remove/delete any of the following records: Microsoft Office Identities Cache 2Microsoft Office Identities Settings 2 and any ADAL, Microsoft, or Office entries that are listed within the 'Name' or 'Kind' columns. Note: search for 'microsoft' and 'adal' within the keychain application and delete all returned results. Detailed steps.

  • Option 4 - Delete license files - MacOS only
    • Remove license files on a Mac.

  • Option 5 - You are not authenticated into Office using your UW-Madison Office 365 account
    • Confirm you are authenticated with your Office 365 account.

  • Option 8 - Delete Cached Preferences
    • Mac OS
      Note: Only available for Mac OS.
      • Outlook Desktop Client
        • Delete Cached Preferences

          1. Quit Outlook
          2. Open Terminal (click the Spotlight search glass in the top right corner and type terminal).
          3. Type: defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook (to delete the old preferences).
          4. Type: killall cfprefsd (to kill the cached prefs).
          5. Quit Terminal.
          6. Launch Outlook and check.

  • Option 9 - Sign out of the connected device associated with the Office email account
    1. Sign into the account: https://portal.office.com/account/.
    2. Select View apps & devices from within Office apps & devices module.
    3. Click DEVICES and sign out of all the devices that you are singed into. This will prompt the user to authenticate via NetID login on all the devices they are connected to via their Office 365 account.
